The Road to 100 Million Deviations!
DeviantART's 12 million members, the largest collective of artists anywhere in the world, have contributed nearly 100 million deviations! Let the countdown begin
As a site that many different creatives call home from photographers to game designers to culinary artists what will the 100 millionth deviation be?! Will it be another Flash game to inspire Nintendo's game department? A Simpsons re-creation to compel a hire from Matt Groening? Something to inspire Shia Lebouf's next tattoo? It could be anything!

Art is LEARNED, not Innate
Well, I'm back for another editorial. But this isn't for fanart anymore; this is for ALL artists, especially those just entering the feild.
As any artist would, I like to show off my work to those around me. Everyone enjoys it all the same, but some look at it with a tinge of envy or remorse. Then they utter one of the most insulting statements to me:
I could never do something this good.
I could easily tell you that I was no good when I started drawing as a 12-year-old. I specialized in tracings and small comics, Garfeild rip-offs replaced with very non-Mario-like Mario Brothers. My anatomy was all wrong, my lines weren't straight (I'm ST
To start...
I realize this is easy to overlook, as I am generally polite and kind in most of my comments, journal entries, and deviation descriptions. However:
:bulletblue: I am a blunt person. This often translates as mean. I am not trying to be cruel, I just refuse to constantly sugarcoat my comments.
:bulletblue: I am not your mother, sister, or your close friend. As such, your personal happiness is not my priority.
:bulletblue: I am an adult who must handle responsibilities requiring attention on a daily basis while also maintaining a full time job (which I highly enjoy working in).

Here in Part III, the final section of this article, I'll take us on a walk through of a typical selection process when I'm deciding what to feature for a Daily Deviation.
Of course there are times when I come across a piece of art myself or by suggestion note that just screams out to me, "Oh yeah, this has GOT to be a DD!" But more of the time, I'm out there browsing the gallery, checking out journal and news features, :+fav:'ing, and collecting art like every other deviant. Then when I'm in my "GM Mode," I go back and consider some of the factors I've already mentioned to decide what pi

Giving DD's is Tough - Part II
Part I of this article is here.
In this section (Part II) of the article, I want to address the challenge of keeping "balance" in many factors when selecting works to feature for Daily Deviations.
First, and even though I would hope it would go without saying, in works to be featured for a DD, I am looking for excellence. Excellence comes in many forms, including technical mastery, conceptual originality, emotional impact, and overall aesthetic. What constitutes "excellence" in any area of course is subjective, but as the person making the choices, I'm looking for these qualities from my own perspective. A work can be outstanding in one of

Giving DD's is Tough - Part I
One of the most visible duties and privileges of being a Gallery Moderator is the responsibility to feature Daily Deviations in representation of the gallery. While we as a community sometimes seem to put a bit too much weight and drama on the selection of the DD's, they are still for many deviants a highlight of the dA day, and a prestigious feature when one is received.
While many deviants wish they had the privilege of giving DD's, I know that since I have become a Gallery Moderator, I've become aware of just how challenging it can be to consistently feature "good" Daily Deviations. I also have a much different view of DD suggestions, wh

"Kitsune, or fox, grow in power as they age. After a century, they grow a tail and gain the ability to shape-shift and possess people. The most powerful foxes are those who reach the grand old age of 1,000 (the so-called nine-tailed fox). When a kitsune gains nine tails, its fur becomes silver, white, or gold, and it gains the power of infinite vision….

Griffin or Gryphon
"The Gryphes are so called because they are winged quadrupeds. This kind of wild beast is found in the Hyperborean Mountains. In every part of their body they are lions, and in wings and heads are like eagles, and they are fierce enemies of horses. Moreover they tear men to pieces.".
